What are fractals?

Fractals are often 'self-similar' that is their parts are, at least approximately, a reduced-size copy of the whole.

Sierpinski Triangle

A well known fractal is the Sierpinski triangle.  You can see how the Sierpinski triangle is made up from three smaller Sierpinski triangles and how each of these smaller triangles looks like the larger triangle. This characteristic is called self-similarity.
